We arrived in Juneau early this morning
since we were only a few miles out. It was a very quiet sleeping
night. There are to be five cruise ships here today so we opted to
take an express bus out to Mendenhall Glacier first thing this
morning before the crowds got there.
It continues to be sunny today. The
Mendenhall has shrunk some 750 feet since my sister-in-law was here
10 years ago. It is still impressive.
We also watched some salmon trying to
swim upstream to spawn. Part of the trail was closed since of course
the bears are out in full force to feed.
We will stroll the town this afternoon
and call this a good visit – so different when the sun is shining.
I mentioned in one of my earlier pages
that there is no retail sales tax in Alaska. That is true but each
city can add a tax to sales and that is done and called a borough and
city tax. Just can't get away from the taxes, I guess.
My next post will be in a few days from Anchorage. In the meantime we will visit Icy Strait Point and cross the Gulf of Alaska. We hope for calm seas.
